I realized a few years ago that a picture book was a fantastic tool to inspire children to want to learn more about a particular subject. After they decide they are interested in learning more, it’s so exciting to witness how quickly they consume more details and facts than even I know about…the planets, ocean creatures and construction vehicles.
It wasn’t until my kids started singing along to the lyrics of “Hamilton”, the musical, that it even occurred to me that music could spark their interest in a subject. Especially a subject like the american revolution.
My son: “Mommy, what’s a Continental Congress?”
Me: “Ummm..let’s Google that together, mommy’s not exactly sure.”
To be honest, he wasn’t able to grasp what it was and I only partly understand it. However, he is now obsessed with Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and many other historical figures portrayed in the music from, “Hamilton”. And like most of his obsessions, I love to feed the beast with picture books that will give him additional hooks to keep him interested and excited to continue learning.
