Books About Narwhals

March 12, 2018 By Sarah Jordan 1 Comment

Are Narwhals perhaps having a “moment”? I hadn’t even heard of them until a couple of years ago. I certainly didn’t even realize that they weren’t mythical creatures until a few months ago. With a nickname like “unicorn of the sea” can you blame me?

Now my 4-year-old daughter is obsessed with them and there seems to be narwhal merchandise for sale everywhere we go. In addition to narwhal stuffed animals, narwhal lip gloss, and narwhal erasers, we’ve found several delightful narwhal books.

Title: Narah and the Unicorn: The Original Narwhal Story
Author: Bobby Roe and Zack Andrews
Illustrator: David Grizzle
Age Group: 5-8

This book can stand alone as a beautiful story about friendship. It’s also a clever and magical story about the origins of Narwhals. Again…you can understand my confusion…Narwhals are real, Unicorns are pretend. Got it?

Title: Wendell the Narwhal
Author: Emily Dove
Age Group: 4-8

This is a great book about a Narwhal but it’s also a book for a music loving child. The creatures in the ocean all come together to form an orchestra and at first, Wendell is sad because he isn’t able to contribute. Spoiler alert…lucky for him, every orchestra needs a conductor!

Author: Ben Clanton

There are three books in the series of Narwhal and Jelly, each one as good as the last. These books are adorable, hilarious and your child will keep coming back to them again and again.

Title: Not Quite Narwhal
Author: Jessie Sima

Never have two magical worlds ever come together in such a fun way. This is the story of Kelp who discovers that while he has been living his life as a Narwhal, he’s in fact a unicorn. Talk about a twist I didn’t see coming!

Title: Someday, Narwhal
Author: Lisa Mantchev
Illustrator: Hyewon Yum
Age Group: 4-8

This is a story about a tiny Narwhal pet (This is a work of fiction. A Narwhal pet is not an option much to the dismay of many 4-year-olds) who dared to dream about life outside his fishbowl. His dreams come true thanks to sensitive and enthusiastic friends.
